Solving the right problems is definitely the key thing if you want to succeed. It's useless to try to solve a problem where you have no measurement for whether things are getting better or not. Most companies don't measure the value very well, what they end up measuring is the effort that goes into creating the value. The industry is full of horror stories about huge big projects that cost hundreds of millions of dollars and produced nothing. So it's really the job of management to keep an eye on the value that is created and to figure out how to measure it as you go.
