The origin of it is cave man times. You are in a life or death situation, and that's base y. Your body goes into all this automatic mode where you are giving yourself the best chance to survive. So by doing something like the slow belly breathing it, it takes that automatic physiological reaction away. It tells the body, i am not on this in this fatal flight. Situation, it's ok to calm down. And nearly all of these go basically to taking you out of that automatic fital flight situation, back to a calmer state of being.
