The copernican view isn't picked up right away, or is adopted, maybe not because it explains things better, but rather because it's just more elegant. So you pick up the new paradime, all of those complexities that the ptolemaic model had to iject in order to be able to fully account for the motion of the planets. And so when they both talk about earth, even though they're saying the same word, they 're not referring to the same thing. It wasn't until kepler came around, that he could really, really flush out that their elliptical orbits, and that explainsn but copernicus was right after all.
