The Church's Debt by the 1890s
Around the time of the raids, the church was in debt to the tune of two point three million dollars. The myth that the raids were the cause of the church debt is still basically the common narrativee to day. Only about five % of the church's total debt came from the raids. Bad investments produced the rest.
