Mahalski's parents generation lost a sense of community when satellite TV came in. Mahalski: "You can live in a small town like I do and be just as disconnected from from your neighbors" He says people are more open and accepting here than he ever thought they would have been before the experience with Ruthie. The book is already getting emails from local people who read it and say that they felt so alone there too while growing up.
