i think part of what produces so many of the kind of perverse manifestations and concerning aspects of our politics since 20 16, is that we are in this sort of long legitimacy crisis for our institutions. People aren't necessarily alarmed when they hear that american democracy is under threat because they've lost faith in the system. So i think it is incredibly serious, but there's something unreal where it feels like they're speaking to an American people who are no longer there.
