The History of Hobbyism in the 1920s

Dr John Day is senior lecturer in English at King's College London. He says the 1920s were an age of hobbyists, with more leisure time to pursue activities. The word 'hobby' comes from a 16th-century term for small or inconsequential childish things. In the 19th century hobbies began to be codified and taken more seriously.
