The Role of Ritual in Group Formation

71 children were randomly assigned into groups and they were given distinct insignia to instill a sense of membership. Each group met six times over a two-week period during which they engaged in a necklace beading activity. For half of the groups, this activity was presented in the form of a ritual. But when the researchers probed the children's affiliation with their groups, they found that those who had engaged in the ceremonial way of necklace beading felt stronger in group sentiments than the ones who performed the same activity in the absence of a Ritual.
