The temperature at which they can't do that anymore, we call that their lower thermal limit. When we measured this across the geographic range, we found that the populations where the winter temperatures were coldest had the animals that were the most cold hardy. So Shane says there's a lot of local adaptation. The lizards that can survive that cold have offspring, they can also survive it, but they also just become hardier because they're like been there, done that and walked 2 miles in the snow uphill.
