The History of the UK and the United Kingdom

People have been living in the area now known as Scotland for thousands of years. Evidence of nomadic hunter-gatherer peoples dates back to around 10,000 years ago. In 124 AD the Roman Empire arrived in Britain and built Hadrian's Wall. The Romans never managed to successfully invade or conquer Scotland. After 1297 Edward I decided he should take control of the North of Britain. English troops marched north but were defeated and forced back by the Scots. Despite victories in this battle, the relationship between England and Scotland remained uneasy. Robert the Bruce defeated Edward II of England in another battle in 1314. In 1320 Scottish noble families signed a declaration proclaiming Scotland an independent country.
