The exodus event is just a story that we use to make sense of this reality of sin. But god has worked his way in history to teach us bigger lessons about what's happened in the past. Canaan was never, as you know, the original or ultimate goal. It was a microcosm of the new heavens and the new earth. So everything that happened to israel there was true historical.
