Lela slemani is the first franco morockan woman to win France's most prodigious literary prize. Her new novel, the country of others, was inspired by slamani's grandparents and their lives in post world war morocco. Lela also a journalist and frequent commentator on women's and human rihts. She is french president emanue macrin's personal representative for the promotion of the french language and culture.

In conversation with writer and cultural historian Shahidha Bari, Slimani shared her insights into the impact of colonialism and the ways in which women in particular find themselves othered, politically, culturally and historically.
