Alma worked in the soil sort department, which is the first department in the laundry. She and her coworkers had to sort hundreds of pounds of hospital linen compounded that come down a conveyor belt. They're coming into contact with fluids bags that have stuff left over from surgery. There are surgical tools that come wadded up in the linen. And then there are some of the parts left behind in the linen, and they're working very quickly.
Featuring Daisy Pitkin on her book On the Line: A Story of Class, Solidarity, and Two Women's Epic Fight to Build a Union, a memoir that powerfully captures the drama of an organizing drive—and so much more.
