Governor Francis Edouville wanted to demobilize the troops and replace them with new all-white units. He dismissed a popular black officer who just happened to be Toussaint Louverture's nephew. The dismissal provoked widespread condemnation among the local Haitian troops. By the time the dust settled, 200 Haitian soldiers had been gunned down.
