The more direct and literal expressions of aggression are almost always found at very primitive levels of social development. The rules that we live our lives by aren't explicit, they're deeply imbedded at the level of habit and customd and self evident common sense. These rules are associated with more advanced forms of social life for a reason. If it seems like high civilization has fewer rules than more primitive societies, that's only because most of the rules aren't explicit.
