Anselm is talking about the agony of physical separation in light of this spiritual union. There's another monk named Henry that he's writing to and he describes it as, those whose minds are welded into one by the fires of love. I think part of it is, again, we've just lost something of this in the modern world. It's kind of like Sam and Frodo in the Lord of the Rings. We don't really have that many friendships like that today.
