The Effect of Grounding of Aircraft on Weather Modeling
Jonathan Martin, a professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. We use aircraft observations now as a substantial component of the input data for the numerical forecast models that really drive much of the forecasting of weather from day to day. The regularity of scheduled flights at specific points on the globe make the aircraft data particularly valuable. Jonathan also says, we won't notice the effect of this missing data just yet. It's hitting us at a time when it might be more difficult to untangle whether or not there's a forecast impact because the forecasts that we're trying to make are for summertime weather,. which is routinely difficult to make anyway.
