Is the Camera Racist? And How Did That Come About?
The project was inspired by Kodak's development of film emulsion technologies in the 1950s. When those technologies were first developed, they were only tested and evaluated against people who were white or head lighter skin. As that technology advanced, some of those film technologies were developed more inclusively. It was about the fact that wood manufacturers and chocolate manufacturers could not get enough nuance in their product photography.
