John balby's theory of attachment is based on research in monkeys and humans. The young baby wants to know that its mother is near by, as close as possible at all times. If the baby feels separated from the mother, it will engage in attachment behaviors - crying, clinging, searching. Babies who behaved in this way had a better chance of survival because they were more likely to survive.
