The Importance of Crimea in the Conflict
I don't know whether Ukrainian recapture of Crimea is possible, I do know that it would be quite appallingly dangerous. If Ukraine looks as if it is in a position to retake Crimea, Crimea is of such emotional and strategic importance to Russia. By most accounts, by most accounts, a substantial majority of the population there wants to be part of Russia. That their analysis is that Russia would escalate very radically if and wouldn't go directly to nuclear war but would begin a spiral of retaliation which could end in nuclear war.
