Is There a Future for AI?

I take your point that if it somehow has become a lot easier. We don't know what the formula is. So we keep discovering new things which work and they are somewhat complex. The transformer is a complex model, but there could be simplifications we haven't found yet. It's impossible for lower level intelligence to completely fully comprehend the more complex system,. control it, remain in charge indefinitely. There's a lot of solid physical evidence that cannot be done.
