Is There a Debt to Best Practice?

I teach a course at a vocational college and it still surprises me every year that they still quote Jacob Nielsen. It's just some people just really need the best practice quotations because it helps them feel safe. I think if you're lucky enough to work in an organization where people will let you try new stuff or are open to different approaches on each project, then that is such an amazing opportunity as a design.
