What Does the Respect for Marriage Act Do?
The Respect for Marriage Act does not require any state to allow same-sex couples to marry. But if Obergefell is overturned by the Supreme Court, those laws could go into effect again. The federal law doesn't have any practical importance, but it does provide some assurance for marriage equality in a post-Obergefell world.
