The Roman Empire and the Incense Trade
Rome was an enor os consumer of incense. Roman temples burned frankincense and mur as part of their rituals. It is estimated that each year, well over a million kilograms of frankincense was imported into the roman empire. The romans soon began to consider ways of cutting out the middleman and taking charge of the incense trade themselves. They even offered to send one of their own people as a guide, encouraged also by the expectation of assistance from the nabetians.
