The Athenian Odysseus
The Spartans sent some ambassadors to Athens, and they spoke before the Echosia. In trying to dissuade themistocles and the rest of the Athenians from fortifying Athens, the Spartans did not express openly their suspicion with regard to the Athenians. According to Thucydides, he offered to be the one who traveled to Sparta to smooth things over and discuss the issue. They respected the mysticlies for his military prowess and bold leadership. His bribes no doubt also went a long way.
