The Origins of Israel

The name Israel probably means something like L contends or may L contend. That word is not only the generic Northwest Semitic word for God, but it's also the proper name of one of the gods of the Northwest Semitic pantheon. And so Israel seems to be dedicated to a patron deity, L, who is a pretty widespread leading deity of this whole region. It's not evidently Adonai. The name Adonai is not known from any pantheon at all.
