idioms are universal. They do exist in all kinds of languages. There's not really any reason to think tat they should be particularly common in english. One one that i love is swedish idiom which translates roughly as, there's no cow on the ice. And it's an idiom that's quite tricky to work out if you don't know the meaning. So maybe that's a good test case. Can you guess the meaning of nocow on the ice? Well, it's got to have something to do with the thickness of the ice.
