The Importance of Labs in Diagnosing Heart Failure
A lot of this depends on context. Sometimes labs will be important, right? If you're worried about someone who's got chronic hypertensive heart disease and maybe they have a little bit of a DMA,. You're going to want to check a creatinine for end organ damage. Chest X-rays in clinic are talking about hours to days turn around or sending the patient from your clinic to somewhere else. A low pro BNP makes it unlikely that that person has heart failure.
Learn which exam maneuvers are worthwhile and which ones are worthless in your approach to shortness of breath. In our evidence based series on the physical exam, we discuss the approach to the dyspneic patient with Dr. Brian Garibaldi (Hopkins, SBM), associate professor of pulmonary and critical care medicine at Johns Hopkins, and co-president of the Society of Bedside Medicine. We discuss the physical exam’s effect on our differential diagnosis, maneuvers that are commonly taught, and some simple tests with great data that may go overlooked.
