Sleep Deprivation and Learning Impediments

In those people who'd had a full night of sleep, there was lots of healthy learning related activity. Yet in those people who were sleep deprived, we actually couldn't find any significant signal whatsoever. So it was almost as though sleep deprivation had shut down your memory inbox. We then went on to discover what was changing within the brain to produce those types of learning disabilities. If we just selectively deprive human beings of deep, non-rem sleep, we can produce exactly the same impairment in both brain activity within the hippocampus and their learning ability the next day.
