The Rubrics of the Printing Press
Early printed books were printed with spaces for hand drawn effects such as pilcrows. As demand grew, rubricators couldn't keep up and the pill crow died out. The space where it went remains in the finished text. It's almost like if you go into an old house and they still have theike, the little nook for a rotary phone.
