The History of Indian Food in the UK

The first Indian restaurant in the UK was the Hindu Stan Coffee House in London. After World War II, entrepreneurial Bangladeshi immigrants began to take over some of the restaurants that had closed down during the war. They would use more local ingredients and took shortcuts so that dishes could be made quickly and easily. Until today, almost every fish and chip shop in the UK will have curry sauce on its menu. The vast majority of Indian restaurants in the UK are operated by men from the Cilett region of Bangladesh. And most famously, quite a few of the most popular British curry dishes were actually invented in the UK, not in India.
