Xenophon and the Drill I

Xenophon sent away most of his hoplites, except for those who the commanders felt that they could rely on. These men would act as a rear guard to cover the withdrawal. Then his commanders were to dismiss anyone who was injured or heavy laden with booty. This was not going to be an easy retreat. And Xenophon knew that he needed his very best men to maintain discipline if it was going to work. As dust began to fall, the encroachment of darkness caused an even greater concern for the remaining Greeks. The retreat began, and as anticipated, the drill I spooked forth from the Acropolis in a rage-puffitting besieged men.
