Claims involving rights to lands clogged the English courts in the 1300s. Many heirs claimed a property based on inherited rights from a distant relative. Some scholars offered their services as genealogists to help trace a person's ancestry, which might help to prove a right of inheritance. The word originally referred to markings that showed lines of descent on a family tree or diagram.
