Robert McCaffery thought he would be a novelist. He drifted into journalism as a way to at least make a living. But his work reflected this incompatibility and he had to get out of journalism. In 1995, while in Italy for yet another job, he met a man there named Geust Elphur's who asked if he had any ideas for a book.
