Emily M. Bender: I don't like the term AI, there's a wonderful replacement from Stefano Kinterle to call it salami. But then as soon as you say salami instead of AI, everything sounds wonderfully ridiculous, right? "We need to do our best to try to demystify these things as much as possible," she says. Emily is a professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Washington.

Paris Marx is joined by Emily M. Bender to discuss what it means to say that ChatGPT is a “stochastic parrot,” why Elon Musk is calling to pause AI development, and how the tech industry uses language to trick us into buying its narratives about technology.
