Esperanto and the Soviet Union

When esperantus exchanged letters with ordinary soviet citizens, they claimed nothing was lost in translation. There were no linguistic barriers to mutual understanding - just comeradery and cross border solidarity. The possibility of unmediated communication with foreigners is precisely what worried and annoyed state and party officials. As one confidential party report complained as early as 19 26: Of course it is impossible to control esperanto correspondence between individual persons. In 19 28, party officials began worrying more openly that esperanto was dangerous in the hands of anti soviet elements.
