Dora wins Van Gogh's sunflowers in a raffle. She saw the painting in its original form in London when she was 15. The idea of loving people and losing people is a universal, I think, is a universal feeling. Your book deals with themes of love, loneliness, and loss. Did you base it on anyone you had actually met or knew in real life?I didn't base it on somebody particular. But I wrote it as a middle-aged woman. And by that amount of time I'd lost one parent. You have to put your experience into your work.
