Landscapes Are a Big Deal in Archaeology
Archaeologists can't understand a sight on its own. It literally does not make sense to intentionally put on blinders and restrict your view of what else is around the thing you're working on. You'd be surprised at what kinds of lumps, bumps and features you can find just by taking a stroll with a knowledgeable eye. And stonehenge's landscape is one of the most deeply investigated and best understood in the entire world.
