Being lonely is about as deleterious to your health as a smoking in terms of what it's going to do to your longevity. I think there's to me, like my favorite insight, which is that when these emotions are what's driving your behavior, they're not magically increasing your willpower. It's actually increasing how valuable you see the reward and therefore making it easier. If you value the future more, it's not a fight to choose to pursue that over something you value in the present.
