When Should You Suspect Bacterial Meningitis?

The classic triad of acute bacterial meningitis consists of fever, neck stiffness, and an altered mental status. Pre-disposing factors include asplenia, complement deficiency, glucocorticoid excess, diabetes mellitus, alcoholism, hypogamicalbenemia, and HIV. The incidence of homophilus influenza meningitis has decreased as a result of vaccination.
