The Politics of Poisoning the Alcohol

In 1927, more than 700 New Yorkers died as a result. Why would people continue to drink alcohol with these being the risks? One of them was that they didn't really trust the government warnings. Also, bootleggers had been cleaning up denatured alcohol for years at this point.
