The Importance of Cashing Out Semiotic Arguments
I count insulting people as a consequence that should enter into the cost benefit analysis. The version of semiotic arguments that I just really can't stand are the ones that talk about the meaning of something independent of either how a randomly selected person is likely to interpret it, and also independently of how it was intended. It's like a textual analysis approach to social policy which drives me up a wall.
