Wallace's Commitment to the New Deal
A lot of the Democratic Party establishment thought of Wallace as a flake. It wasn't his politics, it was his commitment to the New Deal itself. Truman in his first year actually did seek to make something of the economic bill of rights idea. But he just wasn't up to the job of president and could be pushed around all too often. When he was basically driven out of the cabinet, he left the party. By ends up running in 48 on what's called the Progressive Ticket. And he sounded like FDR at his best but won the presidency to everyone's surprise.
