Use a personal introduction. Read their web site pages, any books they have. Don't be formal. Show your personality and be friendly. If you can warm up the gatekeeper to whoever you're trying to get to, it will go a long way. And another important piece is to talk about who your audience is,. To show that your ideal community would be valuable to them as well.
