I'm Getting Old, Is It Getting Worse as We Get Older?
As we get older, our learning and memory gets worse. We also know from physiological sleep studies that this biological hallmark of aging is that our sleep gets worse. Some parts of the brain will deteriorate more rapidly than others in the aging process. And one of the parts that degrades with aging an an accelerated manner relative to other parts of the head is the frontal lobe. This part of the brain seems to be critical in helping us generate a deep way of sleep. So as you're getting old, the degree to which this part of your brain had deteriorated directly predicted the amount of reduction or loss of that type of sleep.
