The fortunes of the BJP can be traced back to the 80s when they properly adopted or re-adopted the Hindutva ideology. They essentially blamed all the ills on Muslims, essentially, and by doing so appeal to this large Hindu majority in the country. By 2014, Modi had become a national figure because he created or he pushed a very specific agenda in Gujarat. He essentially managed to build a discourse of development by working with big business.
