CHAPTER

Lucky and Unlucky Concerning Behaviors

I don't really differentiate between lucky and unlucky concerning behaviors. Lucky ways of communicating that you're having difficulty meeting certain expectations would include crying, pouting, sulking, withdrawing. Unlucky ways would include screaming, swearing, hitting, spitting, kicking, biting, throwing, destroying, running. The thing to know is that whether the kid's concerning behavior is lucky or unlucky, it is still communicating the exact same thing. There's an expectation that kid is having difficulty meeting. It is the unlucky variety that is more likely to be on the receiving end of our most harsh, punitive, exclusionary discipline. I don't think it should be that way.
