The Great Famine
In 18 forty six potato crops failed all over the island. At the time, one third of ireland was totally dependent on the potato for food. The british crown made a half hearted effort at providing assistance to their irish subjects. Some even claimed that the famine itself was an act of divine judgment to whip the lazy irishmen into shape. Over a million people died, about one in every five people in ireland.
