The Role of the Amygdala in the Brain
Emotional hijacking happens when we act on impulse before the logical brain has had a chance to assess the situation and choose a response. The amygdala is constantly scanning for potential threats, sending out a crisis message to the rest of your brain. This is your body's way of protecting you in times of peril. Emotional memories are stored in the amygdala as raw impressions. When the amygdala encounters something that resembles an old memory, it'll trigger a similar response.
