Computers Can Play Chess, but They Can't Drive a Car

The public discourse is dangerously disconnected from the academic or technical discourse. To an engineer, it means data from sensors can be synthesized and analyzed to formulate control instructions that are sent to effectors like brakes and steering. But to your mother,. to the general public, it means that the car is looking around. It's figuring out what it's seeing. And then it's deciding what it's going to do next. That requires a broad understanding of the real world...and common sense.
